Road To White Hat Workshop
Even with a pile of academic assignment deadlines around the corner, I chose to spend my weekend at the Road to White Hat (RTWH) Gen 6 workshop, hosted by the UiTM Cyberheroes Club (UCC). Looking back, it was easily one of the most rewarding calls I've made this semester.
Linux Fundamentals & Command-Line Essentials
Led by Razlan Ramli (President of UCC)
The event opened with an overview of Kali Linux and its crucial role in offensive and defensive security workflows. After walking us through essential terminal navigation and environment controls, the session wrapped up with a practical hands-on challenge to put our new command-line knowledge to the test.
Unpacking Capture The Flag (CTF) Domains
Led by Zailan bin Zailani
The second segment broke down core Capture The Flag tracks, offering a structured look into key cybersecurity fields:
Core Disciplines Covered: Cryptography, Steganography, Reverse Engineering, Digital Forensics, and OSINT.
Key Impact: Provided a much broader perspective on specialized security domains and fuelled my drive to explore threat hunting further.
Boot2Root Mechanics & Web Exploitation
Led by Amirul Hakim
The final workshop shifted focus to system compromise and Web Exploitation. Exploring the mechanics behind privilege escalation and the critical importance of root access was a massive eye-opener. Out of all the areas covered, web app security immediately clicked as my personal favorite.
Mini CTF Challenge & Takeaways
We capped off the workshop with an intense mini-CTF showdown to capture as many flags as possible within the time limit. While I didn't reach the top five leaderboard spots, the real reward was the hands-on exposure, sharper problem-solving skills, and a solid foundation to build upon.
This workshop served as a great launchpad for my CTF learning path. Massive thanks to the UiTM Cyberheroes Club team and all the instructors for putting together such a high-value boot camp!
